Truly Going to Keep It Simple

Welcome to Round 2 of Round of Words in 80 Days. This Round I am going to keep it simple (yes, I’ve said that before, but this time I mean it). One goal each month for the next three months. Here we go.

April goal – I signed up for CampNaNoWriMo for the month of April so that I can get my focus back and accomplish something, start something and finish it. For years, I’ve wanted to write the story of life with my sister Pat. The last few months I’ve gotten a few signs pointing me in that direction. Instead of being a straight forward memoir, it will be word-snapshots from our childhood, poetry, excerpts from letters Pat had written to me over the years, as well as first person accounts from my point of view and third person narration from where Pat was at. I have a lot of thoughts on all of that and the biggest snag may be organizing it. But that’s the joy of NaNoWriMo. Just putting it all in the laptop and pulling it together later.

May goal – Do a thorough edit of my novel, “Coming Home” and possibly start looking for a home for it.

June goal – Finish the memoir of my two most recent trips to Kenya.

Of course, I will keep blogging, both here and on the Dino Chronicles and keep training for a 5K. I also will keep working on the nonprofit organization – my kids are in Kenya right now, but as soon as they get back we need to get back at fundraising and start planning the next trip.

And that’s it, besides being a Round 2 sponsor and cheering the rest of you along.

Have you got your goals for the Round rounded up?
At rehearsal for my first wedding in 1986. No, we didn't plan on wearing the same style shirt.

  1. I love your idea for the memoir; I've always wanted to do a bit of a piece-meal type of book myself, because I always have fun reading those when I come across it. I also like your idea of tackling one big project per month; sometimes, all those little extra goals can be distracting and you've got to hunker down on something to get it done. They're all nice and manageable, too, so you got this! I look forward to following your progress in the new round.

    1. Thanks for the support. I don't know if this current memoir will be published, it may just end up something for the family. But that is as important as anything, right?

  2. Sounds like very worthwhile goals. I've joined in with Camp Nano - all the best there!

  3. I like the format idea you have for your memoir.

I have a buddy who was a MK in Kenya. She lives in Taiwan now and is technically American, but Kenya is her heart home.

    1. My daughter's heart is definitely in Kenya. My son's - he is all over the place, in love with Kenya, Ghana and Germany, and has female friends in four other countries. I don't know where he'll end up.

  4. Hi, Chris. Interesting way to organize your projects by the month. And I admire that commitment to keeping it simple. I often start by hoping to simplify my goals, but the list ends up far too long! So we keep experimenting with whatever works to bring us back to the stories closest to our hearts. Have a very good Round, and I'm looking forward to hearing more from you about CampNaNoWriMo and that messy, multi-faceted memoir of Pat and you.

    1. Beth, that is so true - when I have a long list of goals, I jump around so much, that I don't get anything done, or so it seems. I am going to try this simple approach and see how it works. Best wishes on your own goals.
